Land Clearing 101: What to Expect Start to Finish

Turning a wooded or overgrown lot into usable ground is a big transformation, and it goes smoothly when you know what's coming. Here's the whole process, start to finish.

Land Clearing 101: What to Expect Start to Finish

Whether you're prepping to build, expanding a yard, or reclaiming land that's disappeared into the woods, land clearing follows a predictable path. Here's how we approach it.

Step 1: Walk the property and make a plan

Every clearing job starts on foot. We look at what needs to go, what should stay (mature shade trees you want to keep, property lines, utilities), and where the debris and equipment will move. This is also when we flag anything that affects cost, slope, wet areas, and how thick the growth is.

Step 2: Clear vegetation and trees

Brush, saplings and trees come down and get moved into piles. For heavy growth this is the bulk of the work. We keep it controlled and protect anything you've asked us to leave.

Step 3: Remove stumps and roots

This is what separates real clearing from a quick bush hog. If you're building or want a smooth, usable surface, the stumps and root balls have to come out. Leaving them causes settling and sprouting later.

Step 4: Grade and level

Once the ground is open, we rough-grade it so it drains properly and gives you a workable surface. Good grading now prevents standing water and erosion later, it ties directly into drainage.

Step 5: Haul off the debris

The job isn't done until the site is clean. Debris gets hauled off or handled per your plan, and you're left with open, ready-to-use ground.

What drives the cost?

  • Size of the area being cleared.
  • Density, light brush vs. mature trees.
  • Stumps, removal adds time and equipment.
  • Terrain, slope and wet ground slow things down.
  • Debris, how much has to be hauled off.

How long does it take?

A small residential lot can be a day or two. Heavily wooded acreage with stump removal and grading takes longer. After we walk the property, we give you a clear, free estimate on both time and cost, no surprises.
