Standing Water? 6 Ways to Fix Yard Drainage

Eastern NC clay soil and flat lots are a recipe for standing water. The good news: almost every drainage problem has a straightforward fix once you find where the water wants to go. Here's the toolkit.

1. Regrading the surface

The number one fix. Water should always flow away from your house and low-use areas. Often a soggy yard just needs to be reshaped so the surface carries water to a better outlet. It's the first thing we check.

2. French drains

A gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects underground water and carries it away. Perfect for chronically wet areas, spots along a foundation, or the base of a slope where water collects.

3. Surface drains & catch basins

For spots where water pools on top, the bottom of a driveway, a patio edge, a natural low point, a catch basin grabs the water and pipes it out to daylight or a drainage area.

4. Downspout extensions

Your roof sheds a shocking amount of water. If downspouts dump right at the foundation, that water has nowhere to go. Piping it several feet away, or into a drain line, solves a lot of "mystery" wet spots.

5. Swales

A shallow, gently shaped channel that guides runoff along a planned path instead of across your whole yard. It looks like part of the landscape but does real work during a hard rain.

6. Fixing the low spot directly

Sometimes a chronic puddle is just a dip that needs to be filled, leveled and re-established. Combined with proper grading, it's a clean fix.

Drainage problems rarely fix themselves, they get worse. Standing water against a foundation or driveway is the kind of thing that turns into an expensive repair if it's ignored.
