There's no single answer, but there is a right rhythm, and it shifts through the year. Mowing on the correct schedule for our climate is one of the easiest ways to keep a lawn thick and healthy.
The one rule that never changes
Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. Scalping stresses the lawn, invites weeds and browns it out.
By season
- Spring & peak growth: weekly is ideal.
- Summer: weekly to every 10 days for fescue; warm-season grasses may want tighter.
- Fall: steady weekly or bi-weekly as growth slows.
- Winter: minimal, but not zero, on mild stretches.
Grass type matters
Most Eastern NC home lawns are cool-season fescue, which grows most in spring and fall. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda peak in summer. Your grass type shifts when the "weekly" pressure is highest.
Why a set schedule wins
Consistent timing is healthier for the turf. We break it down in why recurring mowing beats the occasional cut.
